On Thursday, August 14, 2008 fans flocked to the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club to enjoy the first Racing for Wildlife Charity Trap Shoot, hosted by Michigan International Speedway, the Michigan DNR and Racing for Wildlife, a partnership between The Ryan Newman Foundation and The Conservation Fund.
Participants competed alongside NASCAR’s #12 Alltel Driver, Ryan Newman, and surprise guest and NASCAR legend, Bobby Allison (pictured at left).
The Youth Winner was sixth-grader Jacob Popp and the Adult Winner was seventh-grade teacher Rob Jellison of Highland, Michigan.
Racing For Wildlife’s inaugural project is the restoration of Mill Lake Youth Camp, a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) property located just 30 miles north of Michigan International Speedway and nestled in the 20,000-acre Waterloo Recreation Area. Today the camp has fallen into disrepair and Racing for Wildlife and MIS, along with our partners, will restore it to its former glory. Mill Lake Youth Camp and Cedar Creek Camp come together with Michigan United Conservation Clubs to create innovative conservation programs for children and families. Proceeds from the event will go to fund the restoration of the camps.
The restoration of Mill Lake Youth Camp is an important start to preserving our environment and our wildlife. Once restored the camp will provide year round experiences and activities for families and youth. Thanks to everyone who came out for your help in introducing a new generation of children to the great outdoors in southern Michigan!
